Medicine and birthday cakes

I am amazed at this thing we call medicine. Woke up feeling totally crap, popped some Advil and voila! I was able to not only make it to the parent teacher conference, but speak intelligently. Success. Now it seems to be wearing off and I'm ready for a nap. At least I got the important stuff out of the way.

Thank you all for the get well wishes. You guys are the best! It never ceases to amaze me the outpouring of support and overall friendliness of our online community. Just in case I don't say it enough, thank you. You all rock!

In puppy news, I think he's doubled in size in only 2 weeks! Maybe that's an exaggeration, but not by much. I need to download the new pictures and then I'll let you all be the judge.

On the writing front, I plugged away at the ending a bit. Not the ultimate scene, but some set up. I must say the writing isn't fabulous, but I'm running with the notion that you can't edit a blank page. I must get it written.

On the contest front, you guys are rocking it! I'm a couple days behind on tabulating the entries, but with all your great comments, I know you're racking them up. (New visitors, see sidebar for details. Over there ------------>)

That's about it from my world. It's gearing up to be birthday cake season. Thing 2 has not yet decided what he wants his be. First he said R2-D2. Then Woody from Toy Story. I don't know which would be easier. Last year I made Super Spy from the Backyardigans (for all you parents of young Noggin watchers). Hey, there's an idea.

For your viewing pleasure, I give you...birthday cakes through the years.

My very first attempt at a character cake was Oscar the Grouch. Each balloon was a different flavor cake. One was egg and dairy free. That was the flat one.

Next came Dora. For some reason I used a Dora cake pan. Never again. Freehand is so much easier for me.

After Dora was the Strawberry cake and apple cupcakes. Thing 2 was all about fruit.

Next came Curious George with his wacky eye.

And then it was the year of Cars. First, Lightning McQueen, Chick Hicks and The King

Followed shortly by Mack the Truck

Then came Pablo as Super Spy

And finally, Toad.

Somewhere in there I also agreed to make SpongeBob for a friend's son.

And there you have it. Anissa's cakes through the years. I think I've improved over time. The discovery of homemade fondant made things easier. And just so you know, the cakes taste better than they look. I make them with a super light and fluffy whipped cream cake recipe. I use buttercream frosting for the character cakes, but given the choice, I like to frost with whipped cream. Like so: Oh man! Now I'm totally jonesing for cake. May have to whip up a batch of cupcakes. Tomorrow. When I'm well.

See you then!

So, I found your blog by commenting on Maggie Stiefvater's blog and am now a follower and entering your contest, he, he, he. I am a writer too, not published yet, but someday. . . And I have a new puppy! Giant schnauzer 5 months, and I chase kids! And I am an artist would love to have you at my blog :) So here's my question how do you keep writing as a priority in your life with everything else you have to balance?

I'm impressed.
I made a castle cake for middle one, and for lack of better description, it looked like vomitted cake jumbled with multi-colored pastel frosting.
I refused to take a picture of it, and I was embarrassed to serve it at the party. I told my husband to throw it away and we would make do without a cake.

I am amazed! You make incredible things. I need to hide this post from my children so they don't realize they've been neglected in the birthday cake area. Thanks for the good advice yesterday, and I'm glad you're feeling better:)

Wow, just wow. I have to make a cake for my daughter's birthday party on Friday. I think I'll just make cupcakes-- I don't have your skills.

NOOOOOO! Not cake... I've been craving cake/pie/cheesecake all week. Seeing your wonderful creations only made it worse! But those are pretty nifty cakes..I'm way jealous of your talent. Maybe I'll try sometime...but it will probably end up on worstcakes.com or something!

Wow! Very cool cakes!! My kids would love the superspy one!

I'm so glad you're feeling better.

I can't wait to see the pictures of the puppy. Mine is now four months and he adds about 3-4 pounds a week. He's more than doubled by far since we got him two months ago. It's crazy how big he's gotten.

I just started following you and I didn't even know there was a contest! Yay! I'll be sure to spread it around. :)

WOW. I can't even begin to imagine how you did that. Absolutely amazing. You have some lucking Things. LOL

About meds, isn't it crazy? I got a small fever this afternoon with joint aches. Had to still take care of Kidlets, so I popped a few Ibuprofren and here I am, pain-free. Pretty cool.

I'm in awe of you and your cakes. My kids request what I tell the baker to put on the cake. ;) I have no artistic ability whatsoever!

I can't let Boop see that SpongeBob cake or that's all she'll every want! Amazing!!!

MmmmmMMmmm... cake. YUM! I need one of those cakes NOW!

My favorite past time is making gum paste flowers. I don't do it anymore, but I love those little flowers! ; )

Love the cakes. They're all beautiful.

Whoa. I bow down at your cake altar. My poor kids get Coldstone cakes, which are delicious, but really expensive and unoriginal. How you are feeling better. Maybe you need some cake. Shaped like an Advil.

My first thought was...

Shh...shhh....secret. Shh...shh...secret agent.
I'm a secret agent on a secret mission
A secret agent, I slide in to position
I'm Secret Agent Cool and I'm Secret Agent Sly
I spy what I spy with my secret agent eyes
We do what we do and we don't ask permission
We're secret agents on a secret mission...

Yeah. I have watched a lot of Backyardigans in my day, LOL.

Your cakes are beautiful! We are very fortunate that my sister in law is talented like you and makes the cakes for my daughters. My 7 yr old's bday in Sept was Tinkerbell. :)

Glad you are feeling better and made it through conference day. :)

Thanks so much for the kind comments, Anissa! I look forward to reading your posts -- especially if they come with more cake.

Amazing cakes!! I want to eat all of them! Even George with his wacky eye! lol.
And yes, I agree, medicine is freaky! I learned that headache medicine doesn't actually fix anything, it just confuses the signals to your brain and tricks you into thinking it doesn't hurt. And that freaks me out. I only take something when I'm REALLY REALLY hurting! lol. But I'm odd.. I don't often use the microwave either.

Hey! Cool contest and cool cakes and cool blog. Did I mention cool?

Thanks for stopping by my blog. I'm going for your contest. Feel free to enter mine too!

Thanks for coming to see my blog! I LOVE your cakes by the way, they are so creative and how did you ever learn to do that? I think your blog is awesome, and such friendly people commenting too :)

WOW! I'm so jealous! If I tried to decorate my own cake...I don't even want to know what I'd come out with. It would probably be some whacked up, completely inappropriate rendition of a penis or something. Of course, I wouldn't have been trying to make a penis-cake. I would have been trying to make a truck, or a Disney princess, or something similarly childlike.

Glad to make your night :P I have my moments. Thanks for checking out my blog!

This brings back lots of memories. I remember a Princess Barbie cake - bought not made - but it was so gorgeous, I didn't want to cut it.

Thank you all for the kind comments on my cakes. I do enjoy making them, but only twice a year. 8 hours on one cake is a bit exhausting, though I am getting faster. Still, all that effort and then Poof! it's cut and eaten in two seconds flat. As a cake should be. :)

I'm so impressed with your cake decorating skills! I've been decorating cakes for the kids for years, but most of them were with cake pans. I use buttercream icing. You're clearly way better at it than I am, but I'm proud of mine, too. :)

I hope you're well now. I'll read the more recent posts and find out.
